Applying for a Social Security Card for a Child

The process for a child is different, with more stringent rules to protect their identity.

Applications for children can never be completed fully online. You will always be required to present original documents in person or by mail. Due to the sensitive nature of these documents, the SSA strongly recommends visiting a local office. You will need to provide original documents proving the child’s citizenship, age, and identity, as well as proof of your own identity.

You must provide several original documents.

To proceed, please confirm you can provide documents from the list below:

  • 1. Proof of Child’s U.S. Citizenship: U.S. Birth Certificate or U.S. Passport.
  • 2. Proof of Child’s Identity: U.S. Passport, School ID/Record, Doctor/Clinic Record, or Daycare Record.
  • 3. Proof of Your Identity (Parent/Guardian): Your own unexpired U.S. Driver’s License, State-Issued ID, or U.S. Passport.
